Last Splash of Summer on Saturday

With the school year set to begin next week, kids can enjoy a Saturday of fun at the Last Splash of Summer. The second annual event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Park County Fairgrounds.

Kids can expect thousands of water balloons, three slip-n-slides, small kiddie swimming pools, corn hole, music and bounce houses (provided by Cody Bounce). There will also be a beer garden for adults, provided by K-Bar with adult beverages and games.

Organizer Doug Montgomery said last year’s event “was just a crazy idea spawned from water balloons being on sale.”

From 5,000 water balloons, the Last Splash of Summer eventually “turned into 52,000 water balloons and mass chaos,” he said.

“With the help of the fire department, the city, the fairgrounds and many business owners, we were able to put on quite a spectacle,” Montgomery said.

This year’s event will be a little different and more organized, he said.

There will be a $1 charge per person and children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Money will be donated directly to one of the following local groups: The Lauralynn Project, Safe Kids of Powell, Backpack Blessings and the Boy Scouts, Montgomery said.

There also will be food trucks “who so generously donated quite a bit of money each to buy the balloons and who will also donate 10 percent of their take for the day directly back to the groups.”

Food vendors at Saturday’s event will be Smoke Eaters BBQ, Skyline Cafe, Ohana’s Shaved Ice, and Wilcox Ice Cream, provided by Marc Delquadro and his nieces.

Montgomery thanked everyone who helped get the Last Splash of Summer off the ground, and those who have supported the event again this year.

“This event is not sponsored by any one person — it is completely community driven,” he said. “I’m just a guy who made a few phone calls.”

Volunteers are needed beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/PowellKidsDay/ or call Montgomery at 307-254-5056.
