Lady Panthers JV volleyball team wins conference

Powell High School’s junior varsity volleyball team ended the season undefeated in the conference. The team also only lost one game all season, with one game ending in a tie at a tournament for an overall record of 27-1-1.

“I am so proud of these girls, they impressed me all throughout the season,” said JV coach Tasha Miller. “One of my highlights was the game against Billings Senior.”

When Billings Senior came to Powell on Sept. 12, Powell won in three sets (at the junior varsity level, three sets are played instead of five).

“Billings Senior is a much bigger school and the girls towered over us,” Miller said. “That first game started out slow because I think we were intimidated but then my girls do what they do best and believed in themselves and never gave up and we ended up beating them in three.”

The first set was won by Billings 25-14 but Powell won the next two, 25-13 and 25-19.

“It happened throughout the season: It didn’t matter how far down we would get in points, somehow the girls would always figure it out and end up coming back to win,” Miller said.

Throughout the season, the Lady Panthers also went undefeated at the Riverton Invite (7-0), beat Lovell in two sets (25-6 and 25-16) and went 3-0 at the Thermopolis Invite. At the Rawlins Invite, the Lady Panthers went 4-1-1, beat Worland in three sets (16-25, 25-13 and 25-15), beat Cody in two the first time (26-24 and 25-16) and in three sets the second time (25-19, 23-25 and 15-13).

Powell beat Lander in two sets in both encounters (25-11, 25-11 and 25-9, 25-19), went 4-0 at the Conference Duals and beat Riverton in two (25-11, 25-21) and three sets (25-14, 23-25 and 25-22).

“I loved watching their drive and their ability to have fun while playing,” Miller said. “I have coached the juniors on my team for the last three seasons and it’s a trait that they have always had that makes it so fun to coach.”

Ashtyn Heny led in aces with 61 for the season and led with a 95.3 serve-in percentage. Jasmyne Lensegrav followed with 44 aces and a serve-in percentage of 93.7 percent, while Karlie McKenzie had 33 aces and 94.7 percent.

“I was so impressed with our serving — our team average was 93 percent,” Miller said.

Lensegrav led in kills with 116 and had the highest hitting percentage with 0.179 percent. She was followed by Devon Curtis with 83 kills and a 0.147 hitting percentage.

Kady Wells had the team’s highest passing average at 2.21 followed by libero Karlie McKenzie with 2.08.

Curtis led in blocks with a total of 36, followed by Sabrina Shoopman with 24 for the season.

Karlie McKenzie led in digs with 65, followed by Gabi Metzler with 40.

For the setters, Metzler had 646 set assists out of 685 attempts and Michele Wagner had 452 set assists out of 487 attempts.
