Dear Editor:

Our government wants us to believe that it is there to protect and serve the American people. Yet it allows corporations to promote merchandise of death like alcohol, tobacco and inadequately tested prescription drugs. Every year, tobacco alone kills 6 million people worldwide, half a million in the US. That’s a yearly holocaust. Globally, another 3 million people die every year from alcohol. Every year 128,000 Americans die from adverse reactions to legally prescribed drugs; that makes it the fourth-leading cause of death in this country.

In 2019, our federal government took in over $12 billion in tobacco taxes, $10 billion in alcohol taxes. The top 10 pharmaceutical corporations reported revenues of over $370 billion in 2018. Corporations are not only making billions selling these products, but also selling rehab for addictions to these products, medical services profit from all the diseases caused by these products and legal services profit from all the crime related to the products. The pain, suffering, sickness and death created by these substances are overlooked for the sake of profit.

Abortion is legal. The WHO estimates every year there are 40-50 million abortions worldwide, with close to 900,000 in the U.S. The average cost of an abortion in the U.S. is $500. Do the math. Abortion providers are raking in $450 million every year in a business that just kills babies. Unbelievable!

In the 20th century it is estimated that over 200 million people died as a result of war. But the top U.S.-based arms suppliers had combined revenues of $201.3 billion in 2017 alone. Massive profits from selling weapons used for death and destruction.

The suicide rate among transgender people is 41%. That’s 25 times the national average for suicides. After surgery, these poor people are still at much higher risk for suicide and psychiatric morbidity compared to the general population. But revenue from transgender surgeries in 2019 was $316 million and is projected to increase to $1.5 billion by 2026. And that doesn’t include the cost of drugs required for maintaining a gender that doesn’t match their biology. It’s legalized mutilation for money.

Medical and legal professionals are all profiting by convincing troubled people that they can change their biology with surgery and drugs when the truth is you can’t change your DNA. But there’s no money in telling them the truth.

With our government, if there’s profit to be made, they’ll make anything legal. Our lives really don’t matter. The government is not there to protect us. It supports these corporations and banks.

Let’s put our faith, hope and trust in God who loves us, in our father who created us and in his son, Jesus, who saves us and gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us.
