In last swims of regular season, Panthers top Cody, Worland

The Powell boys defeated Cody and Worland in their final swimming and diving competition of the regular season.

The Panthers racked up 169 points to the 140 posted by the hosting Worland Warriors and the 107 from the Cody Broncs at the Jan. 28 triangular.

“We had some pretty good things happen still,” even this late in the season, said Powell High School swimming and diving coach Stephanie Warren. “They are swimming tired now, as expected, and we are still seeing good things happen.”

Warren said she held a few of her swimmers out of the event and others were fighting off sickness.

“We are continuing to move in the right direction before conference,” said Warren. She said the team is excited to host the Friday-Saturday Class 3A West conference meet and is hoping to pick up a couple more qualifiers at the Powell Aquatic Center.

At last week’s triangular, Kobus Diver of Powell qualified for state in a new event — the 200 individual medley.

Jay Cox added the 500 free (5:57.00), thus completing his list of eight qualified events. Cox also had a season-best time in the 200 free (2:09.91).

Rui Parker qualified in the 500 free in a season-best 5:44.47 and posted a season best in the 50 free.

Over in the 100 free, Francis Rogers swam to a personal record, 57.92 seconds, and qualified for state in the event.

In the 100 breast, Panther Bryce Hogen swam his best time of 1:12.89.

Aidan Cannizzaro posted a personal season best in the 50 free, beating his prior record by 0.31 seconds while swimming a relay leg. Meanwhile, brother Ben Cannizzaro bettered his records in the 200 free (2:14.92) and 100 back (a 0.42-second improvement to 1:13.08).

Nathan Fuller also swam a season best in the 200 free in 2:43.36, dropping a whopping 16.25 seconds.

Kyler Warren’s day featured a personal best of 2:35.78 in the individual medley — shaving 3.44 seconds — while coming up 0.78 short of the Class 3A State Meet qualifying time.

Tarren Blackmore “had another good meet,” coach Warren said, noting that he took 6.36 seconds off his 100 back (1:11.35) and missed the qualifying mark by a little over a second.

Following this weekend’s conference meet, the Panthers will have the opportunity to seek any final qualifications at a last-chance meet in Lander on Thursday, Feb. 13, then will head to the state meet in Laramie on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 20-21.
