Honoring those who served: Veterans Day programs Monday

Posted

The Powell community will recognize veterans at several events on Monday.

Powell High School will host its annual Veterans Day ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. The program will feature several guest speakers/readers, and the PHS band and choir will perform. Cookies and coffee will be served to veterans and their families following a 21-gun salute by the flagpole in front of the school.

On Monday afternoon, Powell Middle School students will honor veterans during an assembly in the school’s gym at 2:45 p.m. Middle school band and choir students will perform for veterans. The speaker will be Signalman Second Class Jacque Mooney, a U.S. Navy veteran. A student-led flag ceremony will open and close the presentations.

Then on Monday evening, the American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 will host a Veterans Day program at 6 p.m. The Legion will honor 10 Blue Star families in the ceremony.

If you have an immediate family member who is serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, contact the Legion at 307-754-3411 or americanlegionposg26@gmail.com to be added to the Blue Star recipient list.

For Monday’s dinner, ham, potoatoes and rolls will be served. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert.

The American Legion Auxiliary will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Sunday.

Saturday spaghetti dinner raises money for American Legion

Veterans also will be recognized during a spaghetti dinner on Saturday at the American Legion, located at 143 S. Clark St. in Powell. Hosted by Heart Mountain Hearing Center, the all-you-can-eat dinner will raise money to help fund improvements and repairs to the American Legion Hall so the building will be ADA-compliant.

During Saturday’s event, which runs from 5-8 p.m., veterans will eat for free and the meal is half-price for families of veterans. The regular charge is $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12.

“All funds raised will go to helping our local heroes have the needed repairs to their hall so they might serve more of their fellow service women and men who depend on the Legion,” said Chris Pelletier at Heart Mountain Hearing.

For more information, call Heart Mountain Hearing at 307-754-3464.
