Powell saw a spike in new home construction over the past year.
For fiscal year 2018-19, there were 18 single-family homes built in the city of Powell — up from 11 houses the previous year. That’s a 63 percent increase.
Over the previous five years, Powell has seen about a dozen new homes a year. The exception was 2015-16, when 14 homes were built.
In addition to more houses in 2018-19, construction also started on a new apartment complex, valued at $2.25 million.
The year also was busy for new non-residential construction, with two industrial buildings valued at $1.15 million.
While the city issued slightly fewer building permits from the year before — 307 total, down from 320 — the large projects meant the total value of the work was much higher than 2017-18.
The valuation for the 307 permits totaled nearly $11.7 million — more than double from the previous year, which saw a valuation of roughly $5.7 million.
As a result, the City of Powell collected more in fees. Total fees from permits from July 2018 to June 2019 amounted to $182,480. That’s up $78,390 from the previous year.
