Hiker rescued from Beartooths after becoming fatigued

Posted

Members of the Park County Search and Rescue team helped evacuate a 65-year-old woman from a trail in the Beartooth Mountains last week.

The woman had activated her InReach SOS device around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, while about 2 miles north of the Beauty Lake Trailhead.

The Park County Sheriff’s Office said in a Wednesday news release that the woman “was fatigued and unable to hike out on foot due to a preexisting medical condition.”

Park County Search and Rescue, the Cody Regional Health Wilderness Response Team and a helicopter from Guardian Medical were all dispatched to the scene. At 3:35 p.m., a search and rescue ground team reached the woman about a half-mile up the trail as she had managed to hike back toward the trailhead since the initial SOS. She was transported the rest of the way via a wheeled backcountry litter by Search and Rescue Personnel.

“The success of this mission can be attributed largely to the excellent interagency cooperation that is prevalent in our area, along with the perseverance of the hiker and the ability to utilize an emergency location device,” said Charla Baugher-Torczon, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

In the news release, Park County Sheriff Scott Steward and Search and Rescue Coordinator Bill Brown reminded “everyone” that “all precautions and preparations should be taken while enjoying the amazing back country Park County has to offer.”
