The Powell High School girls freshmen basketball team won five out of six recent matchups — including a 40-20 drubbing of Worland last week.

Powell 52, Meeteetse 16

PHS freshman coach Andrew Borcher said the squad played great in all parts of the game in a dominant Jan. 21 win over Meeteetse at home.

“We did a nice job defensively shutting them down and offensively Kami [Jensen] used her ability to make stills in order to generate her scoring,” he said. “Anna [Bartholomew] also did a nice job as she has continued to grow into her role as a point guard.”

Lander 47, Powell 37

On Jan. 25, Lander grabbed a 10-point halftime lead with a strong second quarter — hitting three 3-pointers — and then held on for a 47-37 win at the Panther Gym on Jan. 25.

“In the second half we played Lander more even,” Borcher said, but “we just couldn’t overcome that second quarter deficit.”

Powell 28, Rocky Mountain 21

Rocky Mountain took advantage of a slower start by the Panthers to seize a 13-12 lead at halftime on Jan. 28. However, the PHS girls rallied for the 28-21 home win.

“... we have to be able to win games where we just find a way to win. In this game we did just that,” Borcher said. “Megan [Jacobsen] took advantage of scoring in the zone offense and we called upon Abby Wambeke to shut down Rocky’s leading scorer.”

Lovell 40, Powell 29

Playing in Lovell on Feb. 3, Powell got out to an early 16-13 lead at halftime. However, the Bulldogs used a 16-4 fourth quarter to take a 40-29 victory.

Borcher said the Panthers “were very much in control of this game for three quarters,” but “I think in some ways we ran out of gas at the end.”

“With the pace we want to play at we have to make sure we are ready to go with high energy for four quarters,” he said.

Powell 43, Greybull 26

The PHS freshmen rebounded quickly from the loss to Lovell, handling some pressure from Greybull for a 43-26 road win on Feb. 4.

“We also got some quality minutes for everyone on the team,” Borcher said. “It is going to take a team effort when we make a run into our freshmen tournament so everyone needs to be ready.”

Powell 40, Worland 20

The Panthers did “a nice job” with a new half-court set in a Feb. 10 win over Worland and “I think our defense continues to get stronger,” Borcher said, adding that the team needs to work on finishing its shots.

“... Those are the things we will continue to improve on so that we continue to get better,” he said.
