Freshman girls wrap up stellar season

The Powell High School freshmen girls capped its 15-4 season with a second-place finish at a Saturday tournament in Worland.

“In the end, we didn’t win but second place and our body of work for the season speaks for itself,” said coach Andrew Borcher.

“I witnessed a group of coachable young ladies, who were hard workers, allow me to coach them up and they have improved greatly,” he said. “They have a lot to be proud of and I look forward to seeing them progress through the years.”

Powell 53, Cody 23

Back on Feb. 18, Powell used a big third quarter to help put the Fillies away in Cody.

“In that third quarter we really were able to use our press effectively creating turnovers and easy baskets,” Borcher said, while Grace Coombs “came alive offensively” with two 3-pointers.

The game wound up being a good “springboard” into the team’s season ending tournament, he said.

Scoring: Kami Jensen 19, Coombs 18, Megan Jacobsen 10, Anna Bartholomew 2, Blake Nissen 2, Gretel Opps 2.

Powell 43, Buffalo 42

In their first game of Saturday’s tourney in Worland, the Powell girls won a tough fight with Buffalo. PHS took an early 17-6 lead, but in the second quarter “we came out of the press and we let Buffalo get momentum,” Borcher said. From there, it was a close game (20-18 at halftime) right up until the Bison missed a final layup.

“I was proud of the girls in this game for their effort,” Borcher said of his team.

Scoring: Jensen 14, Bartholomew 13, Jacobsen 10, Coombs 4, Nissen 2.

Powell 36, Wyo. Indian 34

Things didn’t get any easier in game two of the tournament, as the Panthers led by just one point at halftime and went on to edge Wyoming Indian.

“We knew it would be a close game and it proved to be,” Borcher said. “The girls again found a way to win it.”

Scoring: Jensen 18, Jacobsen 5, Abby Wambeke 5, Bartholomew 4, Coombs 4.

Lander 42, Powell 25

In the championship bout against Lander, Powell trailed 23-10 at halftime and was unable to catch up.

However, “the girls played hard and I am super proud of their effort,” Borcher said.

Scoring: Coombs 9, Wambeke 5, Bartholomew 4, Jensen 3, Jacobsen 2, Alexis Terry 2.

With the freshmen season at an end, Borcher thanked PHS head coach Chelsea Buher and junior varsity coach Troy Hildebrand for their guidance, PHS activities director Scott McKenzie and athletic trainer Alan Hill “for taking care of us.” He also thanked his athletes’ parents.

“They have raised some great young ladies and I appreciate them allowing me to work with them this season,” Borcher said.
