Freedom celebrated at Wednesday event in Cody

The Park County Republican Party is inviting people of all political persuasions to join in a celebration of America’s freedom on Wednesday afternoon.

The party’s annual Freedom Celebration starts at 1 p.m. at the State of Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park in Cody, 2513 Greybull Highway. It’s expected to last roughly one hour.

Local, state and federal officials have been formally invited to the event, which will feature the singing of the national anthem, a wreath-laying ceremony, a flyover from historic aircraft and remarks by Republican Party chairman Martin Kimmet and Ovie Muntean of Oregon.

“There are many, many people who are participating in this program and many of them are traveling long distances to celebrate our freedom — and that’s what this is all about,” said Carol Armstrong, who’s helping organize the event.

Muntean is the COO of Northwest Battle Buddies, a nonprofit organization that provides service animals to military veterans suffering from PTSD. He currently lives in Portland, but grew up in communist Romania. In the eastern European country, Muntean says his family was discriminated against because of their Christian values. His father, John, used a hunger strike to get his family out of the country in 1980, when Muntean was 15 years old. In a recent appearance on KODI-AM’s Speak Your Piece, Muntean said it was only because of pressure from Western governments like the United States that his family was able to leave Romania.

His remarks at Wednesday’s celebration will focus on what America’s freedom means to him.

As for those who support socialism, “all they have to do is live in a socialist country for a year,” Muntean said on KODI. “They’re going to come back [to America] and kiss the ground they walk on.”

While the Park County Republican Party is sponsoring the event, “it is not a political rally,” Armstrong said. Kimmet said there had been some thought of selling Trump 2020 merchandise at the celebration, but that idea was scrapped after it drew concerns from some party members.
