Four Powell students — Aidan Johnson, Riley McKeen, Brian Walker, and Daniel Grotefend — are set to attend the 2020 Wyoming American Legion Boys State program, from June 14-20 at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 in Powell is sponsoring the four boys. The cost is $300 per person, and a 1963 Boys State program participant “graciously provided a scholarship for these boys,” the post said in a statement.
The Legion program, intended to develop tomorrow’s leaders, is offered to boys who have completed their junior year of high school and have at least one remaining semester. Applicants must be of good character and have an interest in government.
Delegates will compete for a variety of scholarships and may earn college credits for completion of the program. Two Wyoming delegates will have the opportunity to attend the Boys’ Nation program, in Washington, D.C.
“In the process of working together, the delegates develop life-long friendships,” organizers say.
Delegates learn first-hand how government works, experiencing what it takes to create and enact laws. The week emphasizes leadership, civic engagement and patriotism. Speakers set to appear include Gov. Mark Gordon, U.S. Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso, and U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney.
The week culminates with a visit to the State Capitol in Cheyenne, where delegates occupy the House and Senate chambers, as well as the various offices and agencies of Wyoming’s government. Delegates have the opportunity to meet the governor and many of his staff members in this full day of activities.
