Lexee Craig, a standout athlete at Powell High School, was still flying high at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field national championships earlier this month at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, South Dakota.
Craig cleared 10 feet, 10.709 inches in the pole vault and finished a lofty 20th in the nation.
The former Panther also holds both the indoor and outdoor conference records in the North Star Athletic Association.
Craig’s outdoor league record is 11 feet, 5.75 inches. Her indoor record is 10 feet, 8.75 inches. Both achievements came in 2019.
“Lexee is a great kid,” said assistant women’s coach Jennifer Willis. “We love coaching her.”
Of the indoor national championships, head coach Shayne Wittkopp said, “Overall we can end the indoor season feeling pretty good with what we were able to put together. Our girls competed hard at the national meet and that’s really what you’re looking for as a coach. We have some things we can improve on moving into the outdoor season. With that said, the ladies represented Dickinson State University well.”
Since making that comment, the COVID-19 crisis forced cancellation of the entire NAIA spring sports schedule. The action eliminates the outdoor season and brings Craig’s collegiate career to a premature end.
Craig was also selected a North Star Athletic Association female recipient of the NAIA “Champions of Character” award. The male honor went to Haakon Frederickson, a Blue Hawk senior from Ennis, Montana.
In a statement on its website, the NAIA explains that the vision of the Champions of Character program “is to change the culture of sport.” It’s mission is “to provide training to instill the values that build character, so students, coaches and parents know, do and value the right thing on and off the field.”
The Champions of Character program focuses on five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
“Students learn to understand how the values play out in both practice and competition,” according to the program description.
Craig is the daughter of Starla and Lee Craig of Powell.
