Final Hitting 4 Hometown Heros fundraiser this weekend

Following 10 years of helping local families, the final Hitting 4 Hometown Heros softball tournament will be held this weekend. The Laughlin family, who spearheaded the benefit tourney and fundraiser dinners over the past decade, announced “with sad hearts” that this would be the last tournament.

“We’ve had a great 10 years and it’s time,” said Kelly Laughlin.

All proceeds from the benefit co-ed slow pitch softball tourney and dinner will go to the family of Calvin Sanders. A longtime Powell firefighter, businessman and Little League umpire, Sanders lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in March. He wanted to be remembered for his integrity and his kind heart, and for giving everyone a fair shake as well as being a positive influence on youth athletes.

Softball games will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Homesteader Park’s softball complex, with championship games at approximately 4 p.m. Sunday. A home-run derby on Saturday is open to all.

The weekend also includes a dinner and dessert auction, beginning at 4 p.m. at Homesteader Park. Desserts will be provided by the Powell Volunteer Fire Department. Dinner will be served beginning at 5 p.m., and the menu includes pulled pork or chicken, a baked potato, fresh Heny corn and salad. Bring a lawn chair and your appetite.

Hitting 4 Hometown Heros’ mission is to raise funds to help a local family with financial needs due to an unforeseen event. The Laughlin family thanked the community for the continued support over the years.

“The community has been so gracious,” said Kelly Laughlin.
