Federal offices to close for Christmas Eve

If you’ve got business to do with the federal government this week, make sure to do it sooner rather than later.

At the direction of President Donald Trump, most U.S. government offices will be closed not only on Friday, Christmas Day, but also on Thursday, Christmas Eve.

Local agencies to be affected include the Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service offices in Powell, and various agencies in Cody, including the Shoshone National Forest, Bureau of Land Management and the Social Security Administration, along with nearby Yellowstone National Park and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area.

Although Christmas Eve was not one of the 10 federal holidays on the calendar for 2020, Trump added it to the list with an executive order he issued earlier this month.

“All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Thursday, December 24, 2020, the day before Christmas Day,” Trump wrote.

The order adds that departments and agencies may remain open and certain employees can be required to report for duty “for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need.” For instance, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners at facilities like Yellowstone Regional Airport will still need to work both Thursday and Friday.

Trump similarly made Christmas Eve a federal holiday in 2018 and 2019.
