Family’s role in Buffalo Bill Dam construction explored in Thursday night talk in Cody

An upcoming program in Cody will share the tale of how an engineer from Georgia helped construct the famed Buffalo Bill Dam.

The Cody Culture Club is hosting local author and historian Beryl Churchill for the Thursday, March 12 program, titled, “Challenging the Canyon: A family man builds a dam.”

Using personal letters from engineer D.W. Cole, his wife, and three small daughters, Churchill will tell of the life of the Cole family, who came from Georgia and lived in the Shoshone Canyon for nearly five years in the canyon during construction of the Buffalo Bill Dam. The dam became the keystone for the Shoshone Reclamation Project.

The Cody Culture Club event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Cody’s Holiday Inn (1701 Sheridan Ave.), with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Things are set to wrap up by 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 at the door.

Founded by members of the community, the Cody Culture Club joins with the Buffalo Bill Center of the West to celebrate the unique culture of Cody, offering insightful programs inspired by the center’s world-class collections.

Earlier programs this winter covered modern shooting sports and the names behind local landmarks.

On April 9, University of Wyoming historian Renee Laegreid and documentary producer Geoff O’Gara will talk about 150 years of Wyoming women.
