Many places in the Big Horn Basin get their names from the Shoshone, Crow, trappers, ranchers and homesteaders who have resided here. At a Thursday Cody Culture Club event — titled, “Jim Mountain ... Jim Who?” — Buffalo Bill Center of the West historian Jeremy Johnston and Sunlight Sports owner Wes Allen will team up to present some of the stories behind local place names and related recreation opportunities.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and “great conversation” at Sunlight Sports (1131 Sheridan Ave. in Cody). At 6:30 p.m., attendees will head just down the street to the Cody Theatre for Johnston and Allen’s lecture.

“Anyone with an interest in the Cody community or the Buffalo Bill Center of the West is welcome to join us!” organizers say.

Tickets are $20 at the door — though discounted ticket packages are available for those planning to attend multiple Cody Culture Club events.

Johnston is a Wyoming native who serves as the Hal and Naoma Tate Endowed Chair of Western History and the Managing Editor of the Papers of William F. Cody. He holds a PhD in American Studies from the University Strathclyde in Scotland, where his doctoral dissertation examined the personal and professional relationship between President Teddy Roosevelt and Buffalo Bill Cody.

Allen — who grew up on a ranch in Emblem — has had a more than 20-year career in the outdoor industry. Beyond owning Sunlight Sports in Cody, he’s held leadership positions at REI, Chaco and Wolverine Worldwide. Allen also co-authored the book, “The Hidden Side of Yellowstone: A Hiker’s Guide to Cody and Yellowstone.”

The Cody Culture Club, founded by members of the community, joins with the Center of the West to celebrate the unique culture of Cody, by offering insightful programs inspired by the center’s world-class collections.

Two more Thursday events are scheduled for this year: On March 12, Powell author and historian Beryl Churchill will speak to the club about a family who came to the Cody area from Georgia to help build the Buffalo Bill Dam; and on April 9, University of Wyoming historian Renee Laegreid and documentary producer Geoff O’Gara will talk about 150 years of Wyoming women.
