Excited to help cover a community I’ve grown to greatly appreciate

Hello.

I don’t like burying the lede, so I’ll just come right out and say it: I’d like to introduce myself as the new editor of the Powell Tribune.

I’m excited to help lead a newsroom that has won many awards, yes, but more importantly is so connected with the community. It helps that I know the community and the paper already, having lived outside Ralston for a few years and thus a frequent visitor of Murdoch’s (and Big R before that), Blair’s (their refrigerated tortillas and their sushi are favorites at our house), El Tapatio and WYOld West, Ace, Bloedorn and other fine Powell establishments.

I was excited for another Homesteader Days even before I knew I’d be a Powell Tribune employee by the time it happens.

It also helps that I know many of the people who work at the Tribune, having worked for the past five years as the news editor of the Cody Enterprise. Why would I leave one for the other, you may ask? For one, I have always appreciated the Bonner family’s dedication to the community, putting the emphasis on “community” in community journalism. As friendly rivals, I have come to appreciate the fine work done at the Tribune, while I’ll always be proud of the work that has been done, and I’m sure will continue to be done, at the Enterprise.

Really, I was ready to more fully embrace a community the post office has declared me a part of for more than three years now (I live a few miles outside of Ralston off the Powell Highway). When I took the offer at the Tribune, I scrambled to call Park County School District 1 to get my and my wife’s two boys in the Powell schools. Now, we have a proud Parkside Lion and Powell Middle School Cub.

This community is so welcoming, and the latest experiences with the school system have only furthered my belief that this was the right decision. Now the boys have bus service to our gravel driveway, our youngest is proud to be at one of the kindest schools in the country and our oldest is thrilled to be able to do hunter’s safety soon and hopefully get his picture on the brag board.

So I’m excited to be more fully a part of the Powell community. My hope is to continue the great success of the Tribune in finding and highlighting the stories of the town and its people. While I won’t totally be leaving Cody behind as my wife still works there and I’ll still be covering the county, I’m thrilled to be a true member of the Powell community.

So I hope to meet many of you soon. Stop by and say hello, or I’ll see you around town. If I have a button-up shirt I’m probably working for the paper, if I’m wearing my sweat-stained Kubota hat I’ve likely gone into town after tending our chickens or beehives, or if I’m decked out in camo I may be headed to a nearby pond or stretch of river hunting ducks.
