Evelyn Louise Clyde Laing, age 91, passed away peacefully in Basin, Wyoming, on Dec. 30, 2024. She was born in Great Falls, Montana, on Sept. 24, 1933, the 11th of 14 children born to Alta Mae (Law) and James Reese Clyde. She grew up in Hamilton, Montana, and graduated from high school in 1951. She worked four years at the telephone company as a business office rep.

Evelyn married Frederick Earl Laing on March 24, 1955, in the Idaho Falls Temple, living three years in Billings, Montana. They moved to Powell, Wyoming, to open a photo studio and raise their family. Evelyn was a loving mother of seven. She loved the Lord and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving often as homemaking leader, meals coordinator and temple cook.

Evelyn was very patient, soft spoken, sweet and kind. We never heard her say anything negative about anyone. She was a talented seamstress of Easter dresses, costumes, quilts, wedding dresses and needlework. She was a great cook and won numerous awards for baking, earning bundles of blue ribbons at county fairs and two sweepstakes ribbons for her homemade bread and bottled peaches.

Evelyn moved to St. George, Utah in 1979 and worked as kitchen and dietary manager at the St. George Care Center for 23 years and again in Mesquite, Nevada, where she moved. She loved cooking, serving people, and volunteered on Thanksgiving to feed the homeless. She retired at age 74. She was without guile and said her greatest joy was that her children got along well with each other. We will miss our sweet mother!

She was preceded in death by Frederick Laing and daughter Margo (John) Wilson, Mesa, Arizona. She is survived by her children: Guy (Tamara) Laing, Roy, Utah; Ginger (Zane) Fross, Lost Cabin, Wyoming; Tracy (Ralph) Decker, Eagle Mountain, Utah; Winona (Alpine) Gibson, St. George, Utah; Jill Laing, Orem, Utah; Robin Laing, Orem, Utah; 27 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and her sister Norma Martin (Salt Lake City, Utah).

Viewing will be in Powell, Wyoming, on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025 from 9-10:15 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 111 W. Third St.; Interment following at Crown Hill Cemetery. A funeral program is Saturday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., 1000 N. Main St. Orem, Utah.
