Entries sought for photo, writing contest in memory of Gib Mathers

Local writers and photographers are invited to submit their work for the annual Gib Mathers Journalistic Writing and Photography Contest.

The contest was founded in 2018 by the Friends of the Powell Library in partnership with the Powell Tribune as a way to recognize and honor Mathers’ work. Mathers was a journalist who wrote for the Powell Tribune at the time of his death in 2017. He also is remembered as a “constant and caring” member of the Friends of the Powell Library board.

The contest seeks to foster great writing and photography as well as critical thinking. It’s also an opportunity for amateur and young writers and photographers to get involved in journalism.

There are two age divisions for each category: Youth ages 12 to 17, and adult writers/photographers ages 18 and older. Contestants must reside in the Big Horn Basin.

A grand prize winner and honorable mention winner for each category will be chosen by a panel of judges. Grand prize winners will receive a cash prize from the Friends of the Powell Library, and the winning entries will be published in the Powell Tribune.

Photo submissions — limited to two images per photographer — should be at least one megabyte in size and include a caption, with details about when/where it was taken. Only minor edits (such as cropping) can be made to the image. Photos should not be manipulated. Preference is given to outdoor/wildlife photography.

All written submissions must be nonfiction. Entries can be written in first person as a column, or written in third person as a feature article. Creativity is encouraged, but entries must be accurate and true. Written submissions should include at least one photo with a caption.

Entries will be accepted from March 15 through April 2 at 5 p.m. Articles and photographs may be submitted in hard copy to Journalism Contest, 1035 Lane 11, Powell, WY 82435 or emailed to lqkliewer@yahoo.com.
