Eighth grade volleyball shows improvement

A season that started out difficult for the eighth grade Powell Middle School volleyball team finished stronger as the Cubs showed signs of improvement by seasons’ end in 2024.

“This season was a remarkable journey of growth and determination for the eighth grade girls’ volleyball team,” coach Charli Fluty said. “Starting off with a few tough losses, the players showed incredible resilience and a commitment to improving their skills. By mid-season, their teamwork, communication and confidence began to shine through.”

Fluty said one of the highlights from the season came in a match against Cody, where the Cubs showed their season’s progress in a hard-fought match to the end against their county rivals.

“The game was intense, with both teams pushing each other to the limit,” Fluty said. “The girls battled through long rallies, dug deep for every point, and never gave up — even when the odds seemed stacked against them. It was a true test of their progress, showing just how far they’d come as a team.”

She said that the Cubs were introduced to the 6-2 offense as well as the introduction of a libero by the end of the season.

“By the end of the season we were running our offense without mistakes and even added a libero,” Fluty said. “This really illustrated tremendous growth in the athletes’ volleyball IQ. It is difficult to run a 6-2 offense effectively without getting out of rotation and the girls executed it perfectly. It is even more challenging to add a libero to the mix, and they did that with very little practice. It was quite impressive.”

Alongside the Cody match, Fluty noted that the Cubs showed fight in another match which proved to be the highlight of the season, defeating the then undefeated Burlington Huskies.

“The girls played with an intensity and unity that impressed everyone in the gym that night,” Fluty said. “Their serving was on point, their defense was impenetrable and they executed their offense with precision. The victory was not just a testament to their technical growth, but to the bond they had built over the season.”

She said she was very proud of the Cubs this season, and is looking forward to them competing for the Panthers at the high school level.
