The halftime show had the basketball crowd on its feet and shouting encouragement Friday night at Northwest College.

Teams from Powell elementary schools dribbled for school pride and cash prizes in a spirited and entertaining relay as part of the First Bank Shootout — a two-day event featuring NWC men’s and women’s basketball games.

Each of the three Powell elementary schools fielded a team made up of one student from each grade level (kindergarten through fifth grade), along with an adult representative for each school to dribble the anchor leg of the relay. Prize money of $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place was put up by First Bank.

The elementary school which could attract the largest rooting section provided an additional element to the competition. Each school had a sign-up sheet for fans arriving at the gym.

“Whichever school with the most attendance for their school wins an additional $100,” said Trace Paul, vice president of First Bank. “It’s all about getting people into the gym. The goal is to try and get those kids excited about Northwest College.”

At halftime of Friday’s game between the Trapper men and Miles Community College, Southside school won the relay in a frenzied finish to claim the $300 first prize, just ahead of Parkside ($200). Westside was the third place relay team, but won attendance at the game honors to take home $200.
