Cubs finish conference runners-up

Posted

Difficult conditions led to tough results, as the Cubs girls’ track teams both came up just short against Cody, placing second at the Yellowstone Conference meet in Thermopolis on Saturday.

The seventh grade girls lost to Cody by just two points.

Ashlee Jacobsen won the 400 meters with a time of 1:08.90.

Kaylen Greenwald was the only other individual winner, as she won the pole vault, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

The other top performance came from Karee Cooley, as she broke the seventh grade record in the mile.

Cooley placed second in the mile with a time of 5:47.90, breaking the previous record set by Kayla Kolpitcke in 2015.

“It was just fun to see that seventh grade mile record go down,” Cubs Track Coach Zach Coombs said. “Karee [Cooley] showed a lot of heart and determination, and it paid off. She works so hard and has an amazing attitude.”

The 4x400 relay team of Eleasah Horsley, Jacobsen, Montana Mixon and Cooley won with a time of 4:53.62.

Leah Graham placed second in both throwing events. Her throw in the shot put traveled 26 feet, 3 1/2 inches, and her discus throw covered 75 feet, 6 inches.

The eighth grade team came up just short as well, as they lost to Cody by just 13 points.

“We were heartbroken for the eighth grade girls and very proud of them,” Coombs said. “We thought we made the right moves to win, and the girls performed so well but came up just short. They gave us everything and have nothing to be disappointed in.”

Audrey Johnson won the 400 meters, finishing with a time of 1:04.38. Johnson helped score points in all the sprints for the Cubs, as she also placed top three in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Hali Hancock outlasted the competition in the high jump as she walked away with the other first place victory for the Cubs, clearing 4 feet, 9 inches.

The only relay victory for the Cubs came in the 4x400 meter relay as the team of Johnson, Melissa Merritt, Nalani Jordan and Josie Werner won with a time of 4:46.15.

Jordan placed second in the triple jump and the discus, as she jumped 30 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and threw 85 feet, 6 inches, respectively.
