Runners with the Powell High School cross country team competed in the Foxes and Hounds meet in Cody on Friday, with Sheridan, Worland, Thermopolis, Buffalo and Lovell also participating.
In this meet, slower runners get a slight head start with faster runners attempting to chase them down. While the results are based on official times, runners who finish first in the “fox and hound” format are rewarded with T-shirts.
Both the Powell girls’ and boys’ varsity squads finished fifth as a team at Olive Glenn Country Club.
Senior Kabrie Cannon was once again the Panthers’ top runner, posting a time 21:24.25. She finished 11th overall.
Gabby Thomas’ time of 23:42.21 was good for 27th overall and Powell’s second-best finish on the girls’ side. Just behind Thomas, Meaghan McKeen placed 29th with a time of 23:50.30. Seniors Hailee Hyde and Madelyn Horton rounded out Powell’s point scorers with 34th and 39th place finishes, respectively.
PHS head coach Ashley Hildebrand said Hyde “is really starting to run well” and “I look for her to improve upon that time in our next two races leading up to State.”
For the boys, Joey Hernandez and Daniel Merritt finished within milliseconds of one another, with times of 18:31.65 and 18:31.81, respectively. They finished 12th and 13th overall.
Those two started 20 seconds apart, and Hildebrand said she thinks that “if they would have been able to pace one another, they could have run even faster.”
Chance Franks, who finished in 18:52.45, was Powell’s third-best finisher at 23rd. In 25th and 27th, respectively, Tyler Pfeifer and Lane Franks were the Panthers’ fourth and fifth runners.
The team will return home on Friday, hosting the Powell Invite at the Powell Golf Club, starting at 2 p.m.
