County to refine duties of those overseeing fair

The Park County Fair Board, with the help of county commissioners, is preparing to once again tweak operations following another successful county fair in order to refine duties between fair board and events committee.

Commissioner Scott Mangold announced the upcoming work session at Tuesday’s county commissioners meeting. While the meeting won’t include any votes, every commissioner is invited.

Mangold said the goal of the meeting is in large part to delineate the duties of the new county events coordinator and the fair committee.

“We’ve never had a policy for the fair advisory board,” he said. “This will clarify what the fair advisory committee, events manager does.”

Commission chair Dossie Overfield said a lack of clear roles has been a problem in the past.

There’s also been a lot of turnover in fair and events leadership. In 2021, weeks before the fair, the events administrator was dismissed and building and grounds director Mike Garza assumed control of the fair. Garza resigned from all of his county duties in March. In May, the county hired a new events manager, William Wood.

Mangold noted that Wood is overseeing many more events than just the fair, although the county fair remains the biggest event of the calendar.
