They just had to be dramatic.
Congrats to the Powell Pioneers Legion baseball team in winning a second consecutive state title.
And after two blowout wins to reach the title game, the Pioneers clawed their way to an extra-inning win against Cody’s ace pitcher, coming from behind late to send the game to the eighth inning and the winning run.
After how tense all that was, it was a relief to see Powell ace Brock Johnson, he of the 90-plus mph fastball, take the mound and just mow down three of four Cody batters to shut the door.
Still, the Cubs played a heck of a game, which made the victory all the sweeter. Of course, what may have been most exciting when the Pioneers won without needing a second game was that we could finally get some work done at the Tribune office.
What a season. The Pioneers had their high and low periods, but it is in overcoming the tough times that show the mark of a truly incredible team.
After proving their worth in tournaments, mostly in Montana, against teams from bigger classifications, Powell was swept by Lovell.
Coupled with splitting the series against Cody, and as good as the Pioneers were this year, they went into the district tournament as the No. 2 seed.
No matter, Powell’s boys of summer have been at their best when the games matter most, winning from behind and winning in dominant fashion during the postseason.
Seeing a final score of 17-2 on Monday against Cody, a program that just a few years ago was the Wyoming Class ‘A’ dynasty, is still incredible, and I smiled through a quick and efficient 10-0 demolition of Casper on Tuesday.
I know I’m far from the only one who wished they could have been there for Wednesday’s title game, but those of us in the office still followed online and on the radio as much as we could. After all, during the summer, the Pioneers are a fun team to rally around, watch and root for.
So thanks, Pioneers, for the fun times, and go celebrate a well deserved state title.
