Cody VA Clinic hosting flu clinics for veterans

CODY — The Cody VA Clinic team invites veterans to walk-in flu clinics on Sept. 19, Oct. 10 and Oct. 17, from 1-3 p.m. In addition to the standard vaccine, the high-dose vaccine will be available for patients 65 years and older.

Attendees should bring their VA identification and consider wearing a shirt with easy access to the shoulder. Veterans who have a fever, cough or any other coronavirus symptoms the day of their shot, should call the clinic to reschedule their appointment.

If veterans are unable to take part in the scheduled flu clinics, they can get a no-cost flu shot from one of many partner community pharmacies or urgent care clinics that offer the flu shots. For a list of pharmacies or urgent care clinics in the VA network, go to va.gov/find-locations then type in city/state and select “Community pharmacies” or “Urgent care.” Community site must be in the VA network for this benefit.

Why get a flu shot now?

It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body. The composition of flu vaccines has been updated. All flu vaccines will be designed to protect against four different flu viruses. By getting a flu shot, you will be less likely to spread flu to others. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are hospitalized with the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months or older should get a yearly flu shot. Flu can be serious among young children, older adults and those with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes.
