Cody sweeps Powell Pioneers in twin bill

Regular season finale Tuesday

Posted

With the end of the regular season in sight, the Powell Legion A baseball team traveled to Cody Friday, dropping both games of a day/night doubleheader to their cross-county rivals.

The Cubs feasted on Pioneers’ pitching in the opening game, plating eight runs in the first inning en route to a 11-1 win. Powell was unable to find an answer for Cubs pitcher Heston Williams in the nightcap, managing just two hits and striking out 14 times in an 8-0 loss.

With Cody moving up to Class AA for the state tournament, this was the last meeting this season between the two teams. Powell will close out the regular season today (Tuesday) with a home doubleheader against Lovell; Cameron Schmidt will be honored as the team’s only graduated senior in the games at Ed Lynn Memorial Field.

Cody 11, Pioneers 1

The Curse of the Big Inning wasted no time in the first game, as Powell starter Cameron Wentz was roughed up in the bottom of the first. After Cody’s leadoff batter flew out to Colin Queen in center, the next 10 batters reached base safely, scoring eight runs on eight singles. The Cubs scored another run in the second and two more in the fourth to cap the 11-1 win.

The Pioneers’ lone run came in the top of the fifth. Wentz led off the inning by reaching first on an error, followed by a Garrett Stutzman walk. Kobe Ostermiller singled to load the bases, setting the table for Queen. Queen’s sacrifice fly to center scored Wentz, but with two runners in scoring position and one out, the Pioneers were unable to keep the momentum going, striking out and grounding out to end the inning.

Wentz took the loss for the Pioneers, giving up nine runs on 11 hits (eight earned) in 2 2/3 innings of work. Ostermiller pitched an inning and a third in relief, giving up two runs on two hits, both earned.

It was a quiet night at the plate for Powell, with Ostermiller and Ryley Meyer each recording a single for the Pioneers’ only hits of the game. Queen finished with an RBI.

Cody 8, Pioneers 0

Queen got the start for the Pioneers in the nightcap, and pitched well for the first two innings, trailing just 1-0 heading into the third. But a five-run third by the Cubs, coupled with Williams dealing on the mound, put the game out of reach. Cody scored a run in the fifth and one in the sixth, earning the 8-0 win.

Queen went three innings in the loss, giving up six runs on five hits (four earned). Ryley Meyer pitched three innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out two.

The Pioneers managed just two hits for the second straight game, with Jesse Brown and Cameron Schmidt each hitting a single.
