Want a free tree? Then stop by the Homesteader Park rest area on Friday.
From noon until 2 p.m. — or until the trees are gone — the City of Powell will be giving away a variety of species to plant in local yards. The city will have western larch, mugo pine, Tatarian maple, aldar, black chokeberry, cotoneaster, American plum, chokecherry, mountain ash and lilac trees on hand. The giveaway is a part of the city’s celebration of Arbor Day, a day in which people across the globe are encouraged to plant trees.
The City of Powell is also celebrating its 31st consecutive year as being recognized as a Tree City USA. Awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation, the program honors municipalties that make a commitment to managing their urban forests. To qualify, communities must have: a tree board or department; a community tree ordinance; spent at least $2 per capita on urban forestry; and celebrate Arbor Day.
