Powell High School students took part in a long tradition of riding horses to school during National FFA Week. Caden Gines, Mackenzie Cheney, Wyatt Moulton, Lannon Brazelton, Stephen Dahl and Caleb Tyra rode their horses to school Wednesday morning. Dahl and Tyra started their ride at the Big Horn Co-op and the other four students started at the fairgrounds. Hadley Mehling also caught a ride at lunchtime, riding double with Brazelton.

Roy Brazelton, on hand to watch his grandson carry on the tradition, said his sons Casey and Jayme did the same thing in the early 1990s, but there wasn’t a lunch trip because “McDonald’s wasn’t here when they rode.”

The students placed their orders over the drive-thru speakers, buying nearly $25 worth of burgers, but were informed horses weren’t allowed in the drive-thru once making it to the payment window. After politely protesting, clarifying they’d already made an order, the cashier agreed to serve them. Once at the pick-up window they were asked to ‘park’ their horses in a designated spot while the restaurant filled their large order. Shortly after, McDonald’s employee Brittany Fransway brought out two large sacks and the students headed north to make their way back to the school.

Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The 2020 celebration ends Saturday.
