Powell police are investigating a Friday morning incident in which a man reportedly forced his way into a room at the Super 8 Hotel to steal cash and other items from the people inside. No injuries were reported.
The victims told police they knew the man, who has since been arrested on unrelated charges, said Powell Police Chief Roy Eckerdt.
Eckerdt said officers were continuing to work the case on Monday — including investigating information that other people were involved with the theft. No charges had been filed in connection with the case as of Monday and the suspect’s name has not been released; Eckerdt said officers were “still trying to unwind it.”
“They’re just in the process of getting everybody tracked down and interviews done ... and determining exactly what happened,” the chief said.
Eckerdt said the incident appeared to have involved a group of people who all previously knew each other, saying he doesn’t foresee a risk to the community at large.
By the account that the man and woman in the hotel room gave to police, the suspect initially knocked on their door Friday morning. When they opened the door a crack, the man barged in — despite the security chain having been left in place, they said.
The man then stole cash, clothes and an iPhone before leaving the room, the Powell couple reported; they called police at 7:11 a.m.
Eckerdt said officers have been working to corroborate the information received.
“The call came in as robbery; we’re looking at it as a burglary at this point,” he said Friday. “Obviously as the investigation proceeds and more stuff comes to light, things could change.”
