Dear Editor:
Back in 2009, Wyoming received 1 billion, 86 million federal dollars from the Obama stimulus. Fast forward to 2020 and Wyoming rakes in another 1 billion, 250 million bucks via the “CARES Act.” (If you want to see a list of who got cared for here in Wyoming, just visit www.wyopen.gov.)
Many years ago, a wise fellow by the name of Alexander Fraser Tytler warned us of the temptation to raid the public bank account:
“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only survive until the people discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public purse with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy … always followed by a dictatorship.
“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through the same sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back into bondage.”
Respectfully,
Jim Guelde
