A boating trip in Bighorn Canyon inspired artist Laurie Lee’s painting that is featured in next week’s Buffalo Bill Art Show.

“I watched in awe as the bighorn sheep traversed the rocky crags, traveling with ease on the high canyon walls,” Lee recalled. “The highlights on the rocks and the reflections on the peaceful water were calling me to paint them.”

After seeing the sheep’s dexterity, Lee said the title of the 36-by-24 inch oil painting came naturally: “Cliffhanger.”

Lee was selected to receive The Peter Fillerup Award at the 38th Annual Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale.

The honor recognizes an artist who not only provides world-class art for the show, but also gives back to their community at a high level, said James Blair with Blair Hotels in Cody.

“The award is as much about artistic capability as it is about character and community involvement,” Blair said in announcing the honor.

The recognition comes with a $1,000 cash prize and ribbon commemorating the achievement.

Lee’s “Cliffhanger” painting was also featured in this month’s Western Art Collector magazine.

Lee, who lives in Powell, was the honored artist at the Buffalo Bill Art Show in 2016. She has entered paintings in the show for 33 years of its 38-year history. The show itself is by invitation only, so no artist can just enter a painting.

As part of next week’s Rendezvous Royale festivities, Lee will host a class on the ins and outs of a Quick Draw piece. Titled “Colorful Canvases with Laurie Lee,” the class takes place Sept. 19 at the Cody Country Art League classroom; reservations are required.

The Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale takes place Friday, Sept. 20 from 6-11 p.m. at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Tickets can be purchased at the Cody Chamber of Commerce.

Lee will also participate in the Quick Draw on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the center. The Quick Draw artwork will be auctioned off right after the artists finish their pieces.
