Early Tuesday morning, firefighters were summoned to North Bent Street for the third time in less than a week — this time for a report of flooding and an activated smoke alarm.
However, the 1:30 a.m. call wound up being “unfortunate, but not a big deal” compared to the week’s other calls on Bent Street, said Powell Fire Chief Cory Baker.
As it turned out, there was no flood and no fire at 536 N. Bent St.
Baker said a water valve underneath an upstairs sink had broken, which caused water to begin running down into the basement. Because it was a hot water line, “the steam set off the smoke alarm,” the chief said.
It was a much better result than a Wednesday, Nov. 27 call at 624 N. Bent St. — in which a home was destroyed by a fire — and a Sunday morning call at 448 N. Bent St., in which a house containing three apartments was also gutted by flames.
Although extremely unusual to have three different fire calls to homes within a three-block radius in such a short period of time, the incidents appear to be completely unrelated.
