Baseball for boys 13 to 19 will be played this summer in Wyoming under the longstanding brand of American Legion Baseball.
There was some question and a lot of back and forth about that in the last week.
Practices in Powell have been going on for almost two weeks.
Over the weekend, however, the national governing board of American Legion Baseball issued a statement saying it would not sponsor baseball during the 2020 season because of COVID-19 concerns.
When the national organization said it would not cover baseball under its umbrella, Wyoming programs started looking into having an in-state baseball league, said Joe Cates, coach of the Powell Pioneers.
“Then a day or two later, American Legion Baseball gave us permission to still use the name, but we are only a Wyoming league,” Cates said. “Powell American Legion Baseball is still up and running, and we plan to keep it that way.”
It’s been a confusing few days for Legion baseball, “but what matters is, we are still American Legion Baseball for the 2020 season,” Cates emphasized. “We are still having AA, A, B and C state tournaments.”
He added that, “We have some strict guidelines to follow for tournaments, games and practices.”
