Alumni weekend wraps with full slate Saturday

Posted

Powell High School Alumni Weekend planners faced an unscheduled work-around after a trailer house fire sidelined their caterer, but the culminating Saturday events in the 2021 gathering will go forward without interruption.

After individual anniversary reunions dominate the Friday schedule, a full Saturday program wraps up the 106th consecutive reunion of the PHS Alumni Association.

The trailer house in the Scott’s Granite Park destroyed by fire last weekend belonged to Roy and Karen Lesher. She owns the catering business, Country Grill, which was to have catered the food for Saturday night’s alumni party at the Park County Fairgrounds.

Lesher will be unable to cater the event, but alumni officials were at work to plug in other food truck catering options for the evening.

The full day of Saturday alumni activities begins with a 7:30 a.m. Orange & Black Fun Run, starting and ending at the American Legion post, 143 S. Clark St. That’s where the Powell Rotary Club will provide a free breakfast for alumni from 8-10 a.m.

The breakfast will be served indoors in the American Legion dining room. Powell Rotary members will sell 50/50 raffle tickets and make a donation jar available to help defray breakfast costs, said Rotarian Terry Collins.

A classic car show is part of Saturday’s offerings, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Northwest College campus.

Everyone is invited to socialize into the afternoon in a picnic setting at Washington Park, hosted by the PHS classes 1968 and 1970. It starts at noon.

Shifting to the fairgrounds, a Panther Corn Hole Tournament will be staged for the first time.

Registration begins at 4 p.m. for the 5 p.m. event, consisting of two-person teams. For those who don’t have a partner, they will be assigned. Cost is $20 per team, with the top three place winners sharing in prize money.

The Red Zone will be serving beverages starting at 6 p.m. Music provided by Billings DJ, Mr. Good Tunes, will start at 7 p.m. and last until 11 p.m.

Fire restrictions prevent lighting of a bonfire at the fairgrounds.

Class of 2000 joins in do-over

Another reunion class is going for a COVID make-good this weekend.

The Powell High School Class of 2000 missed a 20-year reunion a year ago in the pandemic lockdown and will play catch-up Friday. They will gather for a 20 plus 1 reunion from 6-11 p.m. Friday at Plaza Diane, said Niki Keefer. As a bonus, they will be joined in a combo gathering by members of the Class of 2001, celebrating their own 20th.

Joining the alumni circle, the PHS Class of 2011 has scheduled a picnic get-together for their 10th anniversary reunion. They’ll gather with families in Homesteader Park at 6 p.m. Friday for a a BYOE affair. Bring your own everything: food, beverages, family.
