After rabbits are hit with blow darts, police seek information

Posted

The Powell Police Department is investigating reports of cottontail rabbits being shot with blow gun darts. Two rabbits have been seen around town with darts still embedded in their skin, with one rabbit carrying at least two darts.

The first report on May 6, was in the area of Parkside school. The rabbit had two fluorescent-colored darts in its hind quarters.

Then on Tuesday, police received another report concerning a rabbit with a dart in its face, running wild near the entrance to the Powell Library.

“Not only is this cruel to leave an injured animal, it is against the law,” said Community Services Officer Anna Paris.

It’s also unlawful to discharge a weapon in city limits and against Wyoming Game and Fish Department regulations: A license is required to hunt cottontail rabbits and that season ended on March 31. Game and Fish personnel have been notified of the recent reports.

There is another issue, Paris said, of darts that missed their targets lying in yards and on public property, potentially affecting pets, children or anyone coming in contact with the sharp-tipped weapons. One dart was found on the sidewalk at Parkside Elementary School on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, one of the rabbits is obviously suffering, with an abscess around the wound, Paris said, but it’s difficult to live trap rabbits.

Any information about the incidents can be reported to the Powell Police Department by calling 307-754-2212 or the anonymous crime tips line at 307-764-8400.
