Dear Editor:
According to a recent letter to the editor, Ms. French does not believe there is systemic racism in America. She calls out NWC President Stefani Hicswa for her statements denouncing it.
Those who believe racism is not alive and well in our country either do not understand it or choose to look the other way. I applaud Hicswa’s statement and her attempts to address the associated problems.
Our community college attracts student-athletes of color and international students. That diversity enriches the learning experience for all, and they should always feel welcome. Unfortunately that has not always been the case. Nonwhite residents of Powell can also attest to how racism and discrimination have affected their lives.
Acknowledgement of our unequal treatment of racial and ethnic minorities is not “rewriting history,” it is being educated about it so we can make our country and our future better — for everyone.
