The theater has been a historic building in downtown Powell since 1919. Originally built for vaudeville acts, the then Lyric Theater was home to live acts with dressing rooms under the stage, before  the day of silent movies! Extensive remodeling in 1948 gave the Teton a classy 40’s deco look and 600 seats. Alan Mercer remodeled again in the mid-1990’s to put in twin screens.

Alan Mercer, owner of today’s Vali Cinema, started in the movie business in Basin and Greybull nearly 50 years ago. He has been Powell’s movie man for 33 years. He leased the theater from Norm Bentz in 1976 and bought the theater and the drive-in from Bentz in 1979. He sold the drive-in in 2005.
