Three members of the Powell Middle School wrestling team will have the opportunity to compete against the best in the nation next week.

Lannon Brazelton, Keenan Wenzel and Stetson Davis all qualified for the 2019 WAWA State Championships in Iowa on March 28. The trio posted impressive finishes at the Big Horn Basin Middle School Conference meet in December.

Brazelton finished first at 155 pounds, finishing the middle school season with a 21-2 record. Relatively new to the sport, this will be his first trip to the national tournament.

“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “The competition down at state wasn’t too hard; there was just me and a fellow wrestler in my bracket. I’m looking forward to more competition, and getting the chance to go out of state and wrestle.”

Wenzel placed second at 132 pounds, posting a 17-7 record for the season. He said he’s excited about the opportunity to wrestle opponents from outside Wyoming.

“It’s going to be pretty fun,” Wenzel said. “It’s a big tournament, and we had to work hard to get here. I’m looking forward to some tough competition.”

Asked what he enjoyed most about wrestling, Wenzel said the fact that you win or lose on your own.

“It’s addicting,” he said.

Davis wrestled to a 18-7 conference record, and finished second in the conference tournament at 138 pounds. He only had four wrestlers in his bracket, but two of them were national qualifiers.

“I’m looking forward to going down there and wrestling with tougher kids,” Davis said. “And I’m looking forward to wrestling at a higher weight class, not having to cut a lot of weight.”

Davis said he also likes the fact that you win or lose on your own in wrestling.

“I like that you don’t have to depend on anyone else to get your victories,” he said. “It’s all on you to get it done.”
