Students sought for American Legion’s Boys State program

Posted

Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 of the American Legion is inviting Powell community members to join them in sponsoring the local young men who will be attending the Legion’s Boys State program this summer. The event — meant for high school students now completing their junior year — will be held June 12-18 at the University of Wyoming’s College of Business in Laramie.

“These young men are the future leaders of America,” said Russell Stafford, the commander of Hughes-Pittinger Post 26. “We are seeking boys with outstanding qualifications in character and leadership, from academics and sports, to attend one of the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction ever designed for high school students.”

Boys State offers a unique way for young men to learn about the American system of government by taking part in a mock governmental system. Participants can run for various offices in city, county and state governments with activities that include simulated legislative sessions and court proceedings, plus law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.

In early spring, Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 will select high school juniors from the Powell area to attend the event.

“I encourage the entire community — and in particular high school counselors, community leaders and business owners — to submit their recommendations for candidates to attend the American Legion Boys State program,” Stafford said.

Recommendations can be submitted to the post at 143 S. Clark St., through school counselors or by email to americanlegionposg26@gmail.com.
