Newly-re-elected Mayor Don Hillman was looking forward to conducting the first City Council meeting of December Monday night after a period of hospitalization in Billings sidelined him in late November.
Hillman, who is undergoing treatment for liver cancer, was easily re-elected to his second term Nov. 8. He has acknowledged publicly that he is battling cancer, but has said he feels he can continue to carry out his mayoral responsibilities.
“People have a right to know,” the mayor said.
Hillman missed the last City Council meeting of November.
He recently began participating in a clinical trial using the drug Opdivo. After three treatments with no difficulty, he had a reaction to the fourth treatment, and doctors hospitalized him to control a fever.
“I’m going to try to get back to City Hall today (Friday),” Hillman said, and I’m going to conduct my City Council meeting Monday night.”
Hillman is scheduled to have another treatment of the drug injection in Billings Wednesday.
“They’ve had good success with this drug in treating lung cancer,” Hillman said. “And my tumor marker has dropped by 50 percent.”
