Authorities suspect a 64-year-old man murdered his wife at the couple's rural Powell home over the weekend.

In a Monday morning news release, the Park County Sheriff’s Office said David E. Williamson has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, 65-year-old Shirley Williamson.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lance Mathess said the investigation began when a man called 911 at 4:42 a.m. Saturday and reported, “Wife is dead, send the cops.” He then hung up.

Personnel from the Park County Sheriff’s Office, Powell Police Department and Powell Valley Hospital were dispatched to the Lane 11 home, where the call was placed.

When deputies arrived at the residence, “[David] Williamson was calmly sitting on the front porch,” Mathess said in the release. “When asked what was going on, Williamson replied, ‘Go inside, you will see. She is in the bedroom.’”

Authorities found Shirley Williamson’s body in a back bedroom, with an apparent gunshot wound on the right side of her head and a handgun lying on the bed at her feet, Mathess said.

As of Monday morning, the Park County Attorney’s Office had not yet filed formal charges against David Williamson and no initial court appearance had been set.

“This case is still under investigation and no further information is available,” Mathess said.
