After a tough loss against Douglas in the 3A State Tournament semi-finals on Friday, the Powell High School girls’ basketball team rebounded nicely on Saturday, knocking off Star Valley 40-34 to take third place in Casper.
Both teams struggled to score early, though the Lady Panthers capitalized on key second-quarter turnovers to go into the half with a 15-11 lead. Both teams scored with more consistency in the second half, but the Braves were unable to make up their first half deficit. Powell shot just 41 percent from the free throw line, but hit the ones that counted in the closing moments of the game, holding off a late charge by Star Valley for the win.
Rachel Bonander led the way for the Lady Panthers with 13 points, to go along with five rebounds. Senior Maddy Hanks finished her high school basketball career with nine points.
Katie McKenzie netted seven points for Powell, while Ashtyn Heny and Aubrie Stenerson finished with four points apiece; Stenerson led the team in rebounds with 11. Katie McKenzie and Heny were the only Lady Panthers to hit from behind the arc, nailing a 3-pointer apiece, with Hanks and Katie McKenzie each grabbing four boards in the contest.
The Lady Panthers finish the season with a 19-8 record.
