Panthers win, Lady Panthers fall at Cody Double Duals

Though the weather wasn’t conducive to any record-breaking performances Monday afternoon, the Powell High School track and field teams made the trip to Cody to compete in the April Fool’s Double Duals. (Tracksters from Powell Middle School also made the trip.)

The Panthers topped the Broncs 181-90, with 11 first-place finishes. The Lady Panthers came up short against the Fillies 148-117, with four first-place finishes on the day.

“We had some really good performances; we saw some things technically we saw that we really liked,” said PHS head coach Scott Smith. “They’re progressively doing the right things that will begin to pay off down the road. We were missing some kids, especially on the girls’ side, with injuries or sicknesses. Hopefully we can get that under control quickly.”

The PHS track teams will host the L.A. Kohnke Invitational this weekend at Powell High School, and Smith said the teams are looking forward to competing on their home turf — weather and healthy athletes permitting.

“We seem to have this rash of pneumonia going through the school,” Smith said. “Usually that ends when it starts to get a little warmer, but it hasn’t ended yet this year.”

Panthers

The Panthers were driven by a host of first-place finishes, including three by Brody Karhu. The junior finished first in the 400 meters and the pole vault, and was a member of the 4x400 relay team that claimed the top spot.

“Brody [Karhu] is always dependable; you can always pencil him in,” Smith said. “He ran much more comfortably this week than he did last week.”

Senior Kaelan Groves had a solid meet as well, with a first-place finish in the 200 meters, to go along with a second in the 100 meters and a third in the pole vault.

“That was a good all-around meet for Kaelan. He did really well,” Smith said.

Kadden Abraham tied for first in the 110 meter hurdles and had the top spot to himself in the 300 meter hurdles. Jay Cox was first in the 800 meters and ran the first leg of the winning 4x400 relay.

“Kadden Abraham, for a young kid, two firsts is pretty special,” Smith said. “Always nice to see a sophomore do well this early in the season.”

Powell dominated the field events, with first place finishes across the board. Ryan Good continues to impress in the throwing events, placing first in both shot put and discus. Dylan Preator added a first in the triple jump to go along with his second place in the 300 hurdles, while Colby Warner’s height of 6 feet was good for first in the high jump.

“Dylan Preator prequalified in the triple jump, so that was good to see in him winning that,” Smith said. “He also did well in the 300 hurdles, a new event for him this season. He was fooling around during indoors this year, went over the hurdles a couple of times. We told him, ‘You should consider doing that.’”

Landon Lengfelder was first in the long jump, and finished fourth in the 100 meters.

Distance runner Jayden Yates was second in the 1600 meters and third in the 800 meters, while teammate Dylan Cordes, part of the 4x400 relay-winning crew, finished second in the 400 meters.

Reece Hackenberg finished the meet with a pair of silvers, taking second in the pole vault and the discus.

“Reece had one of the more unusual combinations of events that you’ll ever see,” Smith chuckled. “Taking second in the discus and the pole vault is not something you’ll see every meet.”

Lady Panthers

Despite being short-handed, the Lady Panthers still managed four first-place finishes against their cross-county rivals. Sabrina Shoopman topped the field in the 100 meter hurdles, while finishing second in the 300 hurdles. Her time of 16.95 in the 100 hurdles prequalified her for state.

“Sabrina [Shoopman] had another good day ...,” Smith said.

Also finishing first in their respective events were Gabri Lundberg in the triple jump, Cassidy Miner in the shot put and Rachel Bonander in the discus.

“It was good to see Gabri [Lundberg] get the win,” Smith said. “Rachel Bonander and Cassidy Miner each won one of the throwing events and took second in the other, so they did nicely. Cassidy [Miner] prequalified in the shot again, but it wasn’t quite as good a throw as last week.”

Hailee Hyde posted a pair of runner-up finishes, taking second in both the 800 meters (with a time of 2:51.84) and the high jump (with a height of 4 feet 8 inches).

“Hailee Hyde had another good meet. She competed really well,” Smith said.

Elsie Spomer was second in the triple jump with a distance of 30 feet, 2 inches.

Bonander was second behind Miner in the shot put, while Miner backed up Bonander in the discus. Powell took the top four spots in the shot with Reagan Thompson and Isabella Wambeke finishing third and fourth, respectively.

In other field events, Maddie Hackenberg was third in the pole vault and fourth in the long jump, while Hannah Saville was third in the discus.
