Lady Panthers finish second, PHS Boys finish fourth in Worland invite

It was a very strong day for the cross country Panthers on Thursday at the Worland Invitational.

On the girls’ side of the meet, the Lady Panthers took a step up in finishing second out of the six competing teams. The Powell girls totaled 69 points, just 20 behind the winning Cody squad’s 49.

Thermopolis was just four points further back at 73 for third, Riverton was fourth with 83, Worland fifth at 92 and Lander Valley sixth with 127.

All five of Powell’s scoring finishes came in the top 24 places, two of them in the top 10.

Freshman Kayla Kolpitcke was just over 20 minutes at 20:05.39 to finish fourth out of 68 runners, with junior Emma Andreasen eighth in 20:31.80.

Senior Teo Faulkner seems to be getting back to form from her injuries and took 15th in 21:47.00, while freshman Kaitlyn Decker was three spots back in 18th with a time of 22:32.69.

Rounding out the Powell scoring was Natalie Dillivan, another freshman, in 24th at 22:57.41.

Out of seven teams and nearly 100 runners, the Powell boys finished fourth. Their five top finishing places added up to 108 points, behind Cody with 20 points, Worland with 73 and Lander Valley with 74.

Riverton (142), Rocky Mountain (158) and St. Stephens (182) rounded out the team finishes in the boys race.

All five of Powell’s scoring finishes — plus a sixth runner — came in under 19 minutes.

Sophomore Alan Merritt actually was well under the 18-minute mark, finishing eighth in 17:19.53. Jesse Erickson also broke that mark, taking 16th in 17:57.97.

Powell’s final three scorers all came in within 10 seconds of one another and in consecutive slots.

Freshman Colin Queen was 28th in 18:34.97, sophomore Jayden Yates was 29th in 18:35.52 and freshman Dylan Cordes was 30th in 18:44.02.

Matthew Waite — who was Powell’s next finisher, but out of the scoring — came in 34th in 18:57.88.

The Panthers have until Saturday before their next competition, the Thermopolis Invite, which head coach Cliff Boos saw as a good thing.

“It’s nice to have those extra days between meets,” he said of the 10 days between. “It will give us a good chance to really have some good training this week.”
