It was a warm and sunny Monday in Lovell, where teams assembled for the Rocky Mountain Invite cross country meet at the Foster Gulch Golf Course.
Cody, Lovell and Powell competed on the girls side of the event, with Rocky Mountain High School added to the mix for the boys competition.
In both groupings, Cody came out on top, totaling 13 points for the top three girls finishes and 10 for the boys.
The Panthers were second on both counts, with 41 points for the girls and 42 for the boys. Lovell’s 43 points put its girls third.
Rocky Mountain had 60 points to place third for the boys and Lovell 64 to round out the scoring.
Powell’s Kayla Kolpitcke broke up the influx of Cody runners by taking second in the girls race, posting a time of 20:52, with the next three Lady Panther finishes coming in a tight grouping.
Natalie Dillivan crossed the finish line in 23:49 for 12th while Teo Faulkner and Kaitlyn Decker came across virtually together at 24:36 for 13th and 14th place, respectively.
The Powell boys were similary closely grouped in tallying up their team score.
Alan Merritt finished in 18:36 to take seventh place, with freshman Colin Queen placing 10th in 18:57.
Both Jesse Erickson and Dylan Cordes stayed in the 19-minute range, placing 11th and 14th in 19:07 and 19:24, respectively.
Out of the scoring, but also in the 19th minute, were Jayden Yates (15th, 19:25) and Matthew Waite (19th, 19:54). That further showed the internal competition that head coach Cliff Boos has said is helping push the Panther team.
The team next heads to Worland for an invitational meet today (Thursday) at 4 p.m. and will be off until the Saturday, Oct. 1 Thermopolis Invite.
“We’ve been busy, but that break will be good for us,” Boos said. “It will give us a real good chance to step up the training as we move into the second half of the season.”
