Panthers persevere in wind, weather

Posted

With snow, rock slides and cold disrupting sporting events around Wyoming, that Powell High School was able to host a track meet last week was something of an accomplishment in itself.

The Make-A-Wish Invitational took place Thursday in the face of 30 mile an hour winds and cold temperatures — which was better than the forecast for Friday, when many meets in Wyoming were canceled.

“We did get the meet in, which is better than pretty much anybody else in the state can say, so good bad or indifferent,” said PHS head coach Scott Smith, adding, “I was pleased with how the kids got out and competed. It was rough going, to say the least.”

First place finishes on the track included JuliaKay O’Neill in the 400 meter dash, Sabrina Shoopman in the 100 meter hurdles and Nate MaGill in the 110 meter hurdles.

Both the girls’ and boys’ 4x400 meter relay teams finished first — with the girls team comprised of Shoopman, Natalie Dillivan, Maddy Hanks and O’Neill and the boys team made up of Dacen Phister, TJ Abraham, Paige Gann and Brody Karhu.

Due to the weather conditions, five running events —  the 3200 meter run, 300 meter hurdles, 200 meter dash, 800 meter run and 4x100 meter relay — were canceled.

In field events, first place finishes were taken by Gabri Lundberg in the triple jump, Mason Olsen in the shot put and Zach Easum in the discus. Easum also finished second in the shot put.

Coach Smith said that at first kids seemed unsure about competing in the weather conditions, but towards the end, kids were laughing and smiling some.

“I saw some kids that probably for the rest of their lives will be talking about the track meet where they came around the first corner and the wind almost knocked them down and those kind of things,” said Smith.

With the weather making times or distances hard to achieve qualifying times or personal records, some good did come of the invitational:

Smith said some Powell tracksters beat competitors they had narrowly lost to in previous races.

“[It] kind of helped them figure out maybe, you know sometimes kids just have to figure out they are little tougher than they give themselves credit for,” said Smith.

The coach thanked everyone who helped out with the Make-A-Wish Invitational meet, because “it was cold for the workers too.”

“Some people came down to help till the very end which was very nice,” Smith said.

Proceeds from the concession stand were donated to the student council’s Make-A-Wish fundraiser.

Next year, Smith hopes to have a coordinating event/fundraising activity with the PHS student council and the other schools competing in a track invite.

For this week, the PHS track team will have some participants in the Track Classic in Casper today (Tuesday) which starts at 4 p.m. (That meet had been set for Friday before being rescheduled.)

In another change to the track schedule, the Trackstravangza in Cody has been switched to Thursday instead of Friday. Smith said he is “glad the forecast for Cody [on Thursday] is in the 60s.”
