Panthers lengthen success in pool

Hudson Wilkerson dives onto Hall of Fame board

Two more competitions for the Powell High School swim team, two more qualifiers for the state meet.

The PHS team’s success in the pool continued at a dual against Cody on Friday — where they won handily — and in a runner-up finish at the Worland Invitational Saturday; swimmers also added qualifications in more events, posted personal best swims/dives and put a new record on Powell’s Hall of Fame board.

“We’re sitting in a really good spot, I think, for where we are at in the season,” said head coach Stephanie Warren.

Hudson Wilkerson broke a school record in his six dives at the Worland Invite. His score of 246.50 was good for second place at the meet and fifth place on Powell’s Hall of Fame board at the Powell Aquatic Center. The diving records had been unchanged since 2007.

Hudson Wilkerson was not the only diver to have success in Worland: Each of Powell’s five divers posted personal bests and all of them have now qualified for state.

Senior Nate MaGill finished third with a score of 200.65 while Garret Henderson took sixth and qualified for state with a score of 173.35.

Beyond diving, Henderson also qualified in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.73 seconds (good for eighth).

Meanwhile, Bryce Hogen and Alex Hanson dove to eighth and 11th place finishes with personal bests of 165.20 and 151.35, respectively. Both of those scores qualified the freshmen for state.

Hanson and Henderson became the 15th and 16th individuals to qualify for state among a PHS team comprised of 20 swimmers.

“Having almost the entire team qualified for state is huge,” said Warren, adding that they hope to pick up the last four Panthers in the next few weeks. So far, PHS has qualified in 53 events.

Conference swimming is Feb. 10 and 11 in Riverton and state is Feb. 24 and 25 in Gillette.

Adding state qualifying events were Gavin Asay and Joe Kuntz (the 200 freestyle), Dillinger Wilkerson and Chris Lopez (the 100 freestyle) and Trenton Wilson (the 200 IM).

Kacey Creed became the second swimmer on the team to qualify in all eight of his individual events by adding the 100 freestyle during Friday’s dual with Cody. In Worland, meanwhile, Creed posted personal bests in winning the 100 butterfly in 58.29 seconds and the 200 IM in 2:10.34.

Richard Spann — who’s also qualified in all eight individual events — posted three personal bests in the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. At the Worland invitational, Spann finished third with a time of 55.99 in the 100 freestyle and took sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.24. Against Cody, his 2:18.85 time in the 200 IM was a personal best swim and earned a second place finish.

Braden Schiller swam to a personal best time of 1:10.37 in the 100 backstroke in Worland for fifth.

In the 100 breaststroke, Jay Cox, missed qualifying for state by about one-tenth of a second while setting a personal best. Dallin Allred also set a personal record in one of his events.

As a team, Powell beat Cody in the dual on Friday 130 to 38. Powell had a swimmer place in the top two in all events but one.

At the Worland Invitational, Powell placed second with 277.5, just 9.5 points away from the first place finisher Lander with a score of 287.

“We were right there with them the whole time, which was exciting again,” said Warren. “We’re definitely looking forward to Saturday.”

On Saturday, the swim team will travel to the Lander Invitational for an 11 a.m. start.

“We’ll get to see some of those other teams we haven’t gotten to competed against yet so we’ll be able to see where we are with other teams,” Warren added.

Powell will also swim in Cody for another dual match-up today (Tuesday) at 5 p.m.
