Panther volleyball players receive end of year awards

Four seniors on the Powell High School volleyball team were recognized with end-of-the-season awards Nov. 8.

Senior contributors Tayli Stenerson (most valuable), Mallory Triplett (most improved), Dani Asay (most inspirational) and Deasia Daughtery (most coachable), took home the post season plaudits. The first three were chosen by their teammates, while the fourth was picked by the coaches.

Stenerson, Asay and Triplett have been playing competitive volleyball since elementary school.

“Tayli pours her heart and soul into being a teammate everyone can count on,” said head coach Randi Bonander “She led the team on the court with enthusiasm and encouragement along with her phenomenal libero skills.”

The libero is a defensive specialist position.

“I was immediately impressed with her level of communication on the court with her teammates,” said Bonander. “She talked to the hitter/blockers, passers and setters constantly which is a vital component on a volleyball team.”

Stenerson also made all-conference.

As for Asay’s recognition as most inspirational, “she has had challenges with injuries throughout her career,” Bonander said. “But even while struggling through, she has always had a great attitude, put the team first and encouraged the girls from the sidelines.”

The head coach added that the improvement by Triplett was no accident.

“She worked on all the tips from the coaches with great persistence,” said Bonander. “It showed in her improved play the last four games of the season. Everything came together for her which allowed more consistency in hitting, blocking and defense.”

Daugherty started playing alongside this team in middle school.

“The quality that I admire most in Deasia is her great attitude toward improving her skills and desire to help her team anyway she could,” said Bonander.

At the awards night, star awards were also handed out.

Most set assists, most aces and highest dig percentage went to sophomore Aubrie Stenerson.

Most blocks and most kills was awarded to sophomore Rachel Bonander.

Junior Alli Sommerville had the highest overall passing average.

The highest serve in percentage was junior Jordan Walsh.

Rachel Bonander, Aubrie Stenerson and Walsh also made all-conference honorable mention.
