Rotation Reformations Resolved

The Panther volleyball team went 2-2 at the conference duals tournament in Riverton last weekend, overcoming Mountain View and Pinedale but falling short to Lyman and Star Valley.

Against Mountain View, the Lady Panthers won three out of five games, volleying back and forth. In the first game, Powell came out on top 25-20. They lost the second game to Mountain View, 17-25, before taking the third 25-21 and dropping the fourth, 14-25. Powell triumphed in the tiebreaker, 15-10, to win the match.

Powell had a total of 11 ace serves across the five games, with Brooklyn Sweet leading the team with four. Among PHS’ 17 blocks, nine came from Rachel Bonander. Tayli Stenerson had six of the 18 team digs with Aubrie Stenerson close behind with five.

“The girls played phenomenal all weekend,” said Randi Bonander, PHS head volleyball coach.

Against Pinedale, Powell won games one, two and four with scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-12 respectfully.

Pinedale’s only victory came in set three, edging Powell 25-23.

As a team, Powell had 14 ace serves, 14.5 blocks and 15 digs. Jordan Walsh collected the most aces, with four. Rachel Bonander led in blocks with six. Tayli Stenerson led in digs with five, with Aubrie Stenerson and Alli Sommerville getting four apiece.

Against Lyman, the match was also a back and forth, only this time Powell came up just shy of a victory. The first and third games went to Powell with scores of 25-20. The second and fourth games went to Lyman with a score of 25-23 in the second and 25-19 in the fourth. The Eagles edged Powell in the decisive fifth set, 16-14.

The match resulted in a four-way tie for top ace server, with Tayli Stenerson, Jordan Walsh and Aubrie Stenerson and Sommerville all having two apiece. Sweet added a single ace to complete the Panthers total of nine. Rachel Bonander had 10 of the team’s 17 block. Among Powell’s 22 digs, Tayli Stenerson, Dani Asay and Aubrie Stenerson each totaled four apiece.

Star Valley was the only opponent to shut out the Panthers, winning the first three games of the match. But with each game the Panthers showed improvement. Star Valley’s set scores were: 25-9, 25-10 and 25-19.

Rachel Bonander, Walsh and Sommerville each had one ace serve to make up the team’s total of three. Mallory Triplett and Rachel Bonander each had one block. Powell collected eight digs, with three coming from Sommerville.

“(We) found out the best rotation, which makes a huge difference in what we work on the rest of the season,” said coach Bonander. “Now we can dig in and focus on specific skills that need to be honed and use more variety in our hitting. Great weekend overall.”

Powell will host Lander today (Thursday) and Buffalo on Friday, with both varsity games starting at 6 p.m.
